Article Marketing – 7 tips to get it right

24 July 2008 4 Comments

Writing articles is a fantastic way of generating traffic and marketing your business, but like most things there are good and bad approaches. Here are my 7 top tips to get the most out of your articles:

1. Write an author bio

This is the first vital step – to promote your site you need to write a short, catchy authors bio with a link back to your site. Tell your readers a little about you and warm them up – people are much more likely to buy from you once they know a bit about you!

2. Promote affiliate products

There’s no reason you can’t promote affiliate products in your author bio, and make commissions on all the sales you refer! Just register a domain name or use a subdomain on your existing site (rather than linking to a messy affiliate URL), and redirect it to your affiliate link. Now every time someone reads your article, clicks through and buys, you make money!

3. Content sites with adsense

You can build content sites with your articles. Google loves content sites and so do users so you’re likely to get lots of free traffic from search engines. Now you can monetize that traffic by adding Google Adsense to your pages. Of course you can also sell your own products, or promote affiliate products there too.

4. Reuse articles as blog posts

These days it’s so cheap and easy to start a blog, there really is no excuse not to. Google and the other search engines love blogs since they are packed with fresh content. Blogs tend to get a lot of traffic from search engines and are great for building a community and customer relations. Simply cut-up your articles into small chunks, rearrange them and turn them into blog posts.

5. Build an opt-in list

You must have heard it before – “The money’s in the list”. Put an opt-in form on your site/blog to collect your visitors’ names and e-mail addresses for your newsletter. Regularly e-mail your articles to your newsletter subscribers, along with promotions for your products or affiliate links. You can easily build and manage your list with the AWeber autoresponder.

6. Create your own product

Combine your articles and compile them into an e-book. With a little editing, a nice cover and a contents page you have a unique info product to sell. You can even have affiliates sell for you via Clickbank! Don’t want to create an ebook? How about reading your articles out, recording them, and selling them as a CD set or MP3 downloads! All this can be down with free software too!

7. FREE E-Books

Why would you give an e-book away for free rather than sell it? Well, it’s a great promotional tool and through the power of viral marketing you can generate a lot of extra traffic. Write promotional copy to with links to your site and affiliate links, and give the book away away. It will get downloaded and copied, advertising your products and services and generating you extra income.

This is a good information for article writers. I agree that the first step is to write your professional bio – very important to get that right. I have a website called http://www.howtowritebio.com that has fill-in-the-blank templates for various types of professional bios. Your readers might find it helpful.

How is best to submit articles after I have written? Do I submit manually or use a program?

Start with the main article directories – EzineArticles and GoArticles should get you started. As for submission software, I’ve heard lots of good things about Jason Potash’s Article Announcer although I’ve not tried it myself.
